"Ian McWilliams studied musical instrument making at
West
Dean College for three years in 2002- 2005 and it has been deeply satisfying to
me, as his tutor, to see Ian’s career develop. He has been involved in both
making and restoring instruments since then. One particularly noteworthy
instrument which Ian made while at West Dean College was a beautifully
constructed bass viol which demonstrated his making abilities. The viol is
highly decorated with extensive purfling motifs, low relief carving on the back
and peg box and a carved head in baroque style. Inspired by the work of Edward
Lewis, with examples studied in the collections of Musee De La Musique, Paris
and Music Museum in Brussels, this highly individual instrument gives an
immediate response and a fine tone balance and has been on show here at West
Dean. I would like to send all good wishes to Ian for continuing success in his
career."

"The first time
I played the 7 string bass Ian made for me, the
rest of Musica Rustica (baroque trio sonatas R
Us), said as one 'That was worth the money'. Need I say more."
